چکیده
Ramazinni, in 1705,1 was probably the first to record a description of the condition, though the term 'byssinosis', from the Greek for flax or linen, was not applied to it until 1908.2 It was Richard Schilling, however, who, in two papers in 1956,1 established the importance ofbyssinosis as acommon disabling condition within the cotton industry,3 and his work led to the inclusion of the condition under the Industrial Injuries Acts.

The association between the prevalence of both byssinosis and chronic bronchitis and the level of airborne dust was examined in workers in preparing departments in flax mills in Northern Ireland. A weak association between the dust level and byssinosis was found but not between the dust level and chronic bronchitis. It is suggested that the disparity of these associations may have arisen becaus...
متن کاملA survey of dust concentrations in flax mills in Northern Ireland.
The concentrations in the air of total and of respirable (less than 7 microns equivalent diameter) dust were measured in 142 workrooms of 17 Northern Ireland flax spinning mills using a hexhlet air sampler. Neither the distribution of total nor of respirable dust concentrations (mg./100 m.3 air) measured in each of four large workrooms conformed to the normal (or Gaussian) distribution, but it ...

IT is a pleasure to have the opportunity of reviewing a Government Publication which is a report to the Minister of Labour and National Insurance, Northern Ireland, by the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine of Queen's University of Belfast. متن کاملRespiratory disability in ex-flax workers.
Acute respiratory effects occur in a high proportion of subjects exposed to textile dusts. The extent to which these lead to permanent respiratory symptoms and loss of lung function is unknown. A survey of random population samples was therefore conducted in ten towns in Northern Ireland in which flax processing had been a major source of employment. The MRC questionnaire on respiratory symptom...
متن کاملVentilatory responses of normal subjects to flax dust inhalation: the protective effect of autoclaving the flax.
A homogeneous batch of dew retted hackled flax was divided into two portions. One was untreated and the other was steamed for 45 minutes at 125 degrees C in three pressure/vacuum cycles in an autoclave. Dust was collected when the two flaxes were separately processed by industrial doubler and stapler machines. From untreated flax 7.2 g of dust was collected per kilogram of flax after two proces...
